High School Hub
The High School Hub compiles GEOG’s programs that are designed to ignite students' passion for geographical sciences and cultivate a deeper understanding of geographers’ role in mitigating climate change, tracking deforestation and biodiversity loss, addressing food security, combating natural disasters and other important issues for Earth and humanity.
The University of Maryland's Department of Geographical Sciences created the Award for Exceptional Geographical Sciences Students to recognize and celebrate local high school students who excel in the geographical sciences. Student awardees, along with two guests and their nominating teacher, are invited to the recognition banquet to accept their award, celebrate their achievement and learn from our internationally-renowned professors about the ever-growing opportunities in the field of geographical sciences. We currently focus on Prince George's, Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel counties in addition to a few select private schools.
The Department of Geographical Sciences launched the High School Internship Program (HIP) in 2023 with the aim of inspiring high school juniors and seniors to engage in geographical sciences research. In its first year, the program provided hands-on research experience and mentorship to 15 students from the DMV region.
