Xie, Skakun Receive NASA AIST Award to Advance Machine Learning for Earth Science
GEOG Assistant Professors Yiqun Xie and Sergii Skakun have received a new award from NASA's Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) program to carry out research that advances machine learning for Earth Science problems. In collaboration with Xiaowei Jia, Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Xie and Skakun will develop new technologies that address two major challenges facing machine learning for broad Earth Science applications—spatial heterogeneity, where satellite observations and their relationships to the prediction targets vary over space, and the limited and highly localized nature of ground-truth data that are needed to train the algorithms.
NASA’s AIST aims to identify and develop software, information systems, and computer science technologies that will be needed by NASA’s Earth Science Division in the near future. Xie and Skakun’s project was one of 28 proposals selected from a pool of 65 applications.
