Renowned Conservation Champion Dr. Jane Goodall to Speak at UMD
Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), and UN Messenger of Peace will share her experiences and insights on conservation and environmental activism with the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) community at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in the Memorial Chapel. Dr. Goodall will deliver a presentation titled “Inspiring Hope through Action.”
Dr. Goodall is a world-renowned ethologist, activist and conservationist. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute as a global community-led conservation, research and youth empowerment organization in 1977, which includes the global youth program Roots & Shoots, created in 1991.
Her research on chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania began what is now the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world, led by Gombe Researchers and supported by JGI. For over 60 years of groundbreaking work, Dr. Goodall’s mission has evolved into a quest to empower every individual to make the world a better place for people, other animals and the planet we share.
In addition to making many public appearances, Dr. Goodall reaches a worldwide audience through her podcast, the “Jane Goodall Hopecast.” During the pandemic, she has continued to reach millions through “Virtual Jane,” including remote lectures and recordings.
Dr. Goodall and the Jane Goodall Institute inspire the next generation of conservationists through JGI’s Roots & Shoots program, which empowers young people to take action in their communities, creating projects that benefit people, animals, and the environment in over 60 countries worldwide. Among her many activities and awards, Dr. Goodall co-authored “The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times” (Celadon Books, 2021) and was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2021.
Dr. Goodall last addressed the UMD community in 2012 at a special event in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, and also visited the Department of Geographical Sciences to discuss her work and learn about GEOG projects at that time.
Welcoming remarks at the Oct. 12 event will be offered by Provost Jennifer King Rice.
