Peter Potapov Awarded Provost’s Excellence Award for Professional Track Faculty
In May of 2019, Peter Potapov was awarded the Provost's Excellence Award for Professional Track Faculty in the Excellence in Research category. Peter's foremost research area of interest is assessment and monitoring of forest extent, structure, and composition on national to global scale using open satellite data archives. During recent years, his research has focused on establishing a global operational Landsat-based forest monitoring algorithm that enables rapid quantitative estimation of forest cover change and forest degradation.
In the Fall of 2015, the Provost announced the inauguration of annual Excellence Awards for Professional Track (PTK) Faculty. Winners are selected by the previous year's winners and receive a letter of recognition from the Provost along with a $1,000 award in recognition of consistently excellent contributions in one of the three core areas of academic activity: Teaching, Service, and Research.
“...I believe that my research, teaching, and capacity-building activities increase awareness of global environmental change and building the tools for sustainable development and preservation of intact ecosystems. I appreciate the great help from the University and the Department to my work,” Potapov said.
“Peter is an outstanding scientist, and this award is most well-deserved. He is a great collaborator and is very successful at securing external funding for his research. He has built an excellent international reputation, and has been instrumental in developing the GLAD group. He makes a significant contribution to our Department, advising and mentoring graduate students and teaching classes. He also finds time for training junior international scientists in the latest satellite monitoring methods. It’s great to see this truly excellent member of our PTK Faculty being recognized by the campus for his contribution,” said Professor Chris Justice, Chair of the Department of Geographical Sciences.
