GEOG Faculty publish a book entitled “Land Atmospheric Research Applications in South/Southeast Asia”
Krishna Vadrevu (Adjunct Associate Professor), Chris Justice (Professor) in collaboration with Toshimasa Ohara (Senior Researcher, National Institute for the Environmental Studies (NIES) Japan recently edited a book on Land-Atmospheric Research Applications in South and Southeast Asia in the Springer Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry series.
In South/Southeast Asian countries, high population growth together with the rapid economic development are causing immense pressure to convert land from natural and agricultural areas to residential and urban uses with significant impact on emissions and ecosystem services.
This edited volume sheds new light on the causative factors and impacts of land cover/land use changes (LC/LUC) on the greenhouse gas (GHG) and aerosols in South/Southeast (S/SE) Asia. This book contains 30 chapters contributed by 101 authors from S/SEA countries and the USA. Each chapter is unique, highlighting diverse land-atmospheric research phenomenon in the region. The chapters cover both the drivers and impacts of LC/LUC on the atmospheric environment, integrating remote sensing and geospatial technologies. Several chapters highlight the cutting-edge science and provides a deeper understanding and innovative ideas in land and atmospheric research in S/SE Asian countries. The book serves as a valuable resource to address LC/LUC, air pollution, and natural resource management issues in the region.
This work has been carried out in the framework of South/Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SARI) (www.sari.umd.edu), a NASA-LCLUC regional initiative which focuses on the research, capacity building and training activities in SARI countries. The book is a timely contribution to the NASA LCLUC SARI science and, in general, to land-atmospheric research in the region.
