Analysis of Satellite Data Shows Demolition of Tropical Trees has Soared, Not Slowed, as UN Study Estimated
Department of Geographical Sciences' researchers - PhD Student, Do-Hyung Kim; Professor John Townshend and Research Professor, Joseph Sexton - were recently published in Geophysical Research Letters, an American Geophysical Union (AGU) journal, for conducting the first pan-tropical scale analysis, which found that the felling of tropical trees has dramatically increased, rather than decreased, as an estimate of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) would have you believe. For additional information, please read the AGU joint release from February 25, 2015. This research was also featured in The Washington Post, CBS News, International Business Times, Earth Times and UMD Right Now, among others. Interviews have also been conducted by BBC, Reuters and Voice of America.
