Yiqun Xie is an Assistant Professor of Geospatial Information Science at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2020.

Dr. Xie's broad research area is on artificial intelligence for spatial data. One size AI does not fit all. Direct applications of traditional AI techniques on spatial data and problems often fall short due to key challenges including spatial heterogeneity, limited training data, etc. Dr. Xie's work investigates novel techniques and theoretical insights to bridge these gaps in applications such as smart cities, agriculture, Earth observation, transportation, etc.

His group's research has been funded by NSF (IIS-2105133, 2126474 and 2147195), NASA (AIST-21-0068 and 20-LCLUC2020-0010), Google (AI for Social Good), Amazon (co-sponsor of the NSF FAI program) and the University of Maryland (Faculty-Student Research Award, DRI seed grant, Grand Challenges grant).

Dr. Xie is the recipient of multiple best paper awards from top computer science conferences on data mining and spatial computing*, including:

  • Best Paper Award, IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM) 2021
  • Best Application Paper Award, SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM) 2023
  • Best Paper Award, SSTD'19
  • Best Vision Paper Award, ACM SIGSPATIAL'19. Highlighted by the Great Innovative Ideas program at the Computing Community Consortium (part of the Computing Research Association)

Professional services include Technical Program Committee members for conferences including ACM SIGKDD, ACM SIGSPATIAL, AAAI, IJCAI and SDM.; Co-Chair of SpatialAPI Workshop and GeoIndustry Workshop at ACM SIGSPATIAL; and Session Chairs for conferences including AAAI, ACM SIGKDD and SDM; reviewers for technical journals (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology; ACM Transactions on Spatial Algorithms and Systems, ACM/IMS Transactions on Data Science, Geoinformatica), and interdisciplinary journals (e.g., Remote Sensing of Environment, IJGIS).

*In empirical computing research, premier conferences are preferred and more selective than premier journals (More info: National Academies Press, CRA Statement).
