Bio
John Armston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences. Prior to joining the Department of Geographical Sciences, John was a Senior Scientist with the Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science in Australia.
His interests span a wide range of pure and applied research in the remote sensing of canopy structure and aboveground biomass from in situ, airborne and spaceborne measurements.
Current activities are focused on the NASA Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), the Earth Dynamics Geodetic Explorer (EDGE) mission (currently in a competitive Phase A Concept Study within NASA’s Earth Systems Explorer program), and new approaches to integrating synthetic aperture radar and spaceborne lidar observations for quantifying aboveground carbon stocks and structural change in forest and woodland ecosystems.
