Dr. Matthew Thomann Awarded National Institute of Minority Health Disparities (NIMHD)-sponsored Loan Repayment Program (LRP)
Dr. Thomann has been awarded the National Institute of Minority Health Disparities (NIMHD)-sponsored Loan Repayment Program (LRP). This highly competitive, congressionally mandated program offers loan repayment awards to health professionals with doctoral degrees conducting health disparities or clinical research in nonfederal research settings. The program aims to increase the pool of highly qualified researchers who conduct health disparities research. Dr. Thomann's project "PrEP and its 'collateral benefits': A clinical ethnography with Black men who have sex with men and transgender women and their providers in Memphis, Tennessee", examines the range of meanings patients assign to PrEP. In particular, the project seeks to understand how patients perceive the social and emotional benefits of PrEP and their impact on adherence, barriers to care, and perceptions of quality and continuity of and engagement in care. Ethnographic findings will highlight the diversity of sexual and gender minority experience in the US South, adding to sparse knowledge on the perceptions and experiences of PrEP users and the social contexts that shape them.
Congratulations, Dr. Thomann!
