Gonzalez, Cady
Bio
Cady Gonzalez is a sociocultural anthropologist who examines state processes, urban design and environmental change. She received her MA and. PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida and her BA in Environmental Studies and Anthropology from New College of Florida.
Dr. Gonzalez’s dissertation and current book project, tentatively titled “Hospitable by Design: Urban Renewal and State Power in Addis Ababa,” explores water, waste, and the politics of beautification in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Weaving together diverse perspectives of architects, urban planners, municipal agencies, sanitation workers and city residents, her urban ethnography lays bare the tense relations between the state’s grand schemes of cleaning and greening its capital city and urban citizens struggling for dignity.
Her research has been funded by institutional grants, the Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Award and Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships. Some of her work is published and forthcoming in Roadsides and Environmental Humanities.
